Spending Halloween with Lionheart FX

With Halloween bring tonight, we decided that bringing you a scary and terrifying interview would be the thing to do! Now, I am sure that if you have been on Facebook in the last week you have seen the socket girl video… You know the one. It is the one where the girl is all bandaged up and then an eye pops out from where her mouth should be… Well, let’s get to know her a little better! Make sure to check out the links and small gallery below. Enjoy!

1. So besides the amazing work you do with make up and special effects, what is another hobby you have?

I have a lot of hobbies actually. I cosplay, read, write, draw, paint, and love to cook, go on hikes, game, collect comics, sculpt, go on road trips…I like to stay busy, haha. Life’s too short and precious to not stay productive or have fun.

2. What started your love for doing make up?

I’ve been making home movies since I was like, 6, haha. My love for makeup mostly branched off from Star Wars, though. I always wanted to recreate the aliens and be a Jedi, but I would do that with Crayola markers and my mom’s lipstick, so you can imagine she wasn’t too happy about that. As I got older I started branching out to some practical films such as Clive Barker’s ‘Nightbreed’ and John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’. Both are two of my absolute favorite films to this day because the makeups and animatronics are so ahead of their time.

3. What is the most odd job you have ever worked?

Hmmm…I’m assuming you mean makeup job, haha. I don’t really any awesome “odd job” stories, but I do have a horror story. I was flying out to LA for the first time this past January for a big DC Universe photoshoot being put on by Adam Jay, a UK based photographer. I had just gotten a brand new makeup kit and filled it with all of the new makeup that was going to be used for the shoot, along with all of the makeup I’ve ever owned (just in case), my airbrushes, compressor, some latex, prosaid…everything I needed plus backups. When I checked my case I asked them if there was absolutely any way I could pay to check it and then keep it on the plane because I was paranoid about something bad happening and of course, there was nothing they would do, so I crossed my fingers as I watched it go. I had a layover in Charlotte, North Carolina and as I was getting on the connecting flight, an announcement came over the PA saying, “Is there a tattoo artist on this flight with a compressor and some inks? Please page a flight attendant if this is your luggage.” I had a compressor so I immediately paged them and when I mentioned I was a makeup artist and had a compressor, they just said “oh, alright, thank you.” I was suspicious because nothing else was said. One of the luggage guys even came up to me and asked me about my case and I said, “yeah, that’s mine, is everything alright?” He just nodded and walked off. When I landed at LAX, I was patiently waiting for my makeup case to come down the chute, and to my dismay when I saw it coming up, it was completely wrapped up in tape. Even worse…when I picked it up, it was completely empty. the lock had been broken apart, one of the wheels on the bottom was gone, it was completely dinged up all around the sides…it was BAD. I went to the office about it absolutely livid because there was well over $1000 of makeup and equipment in that case. It even had my sculpting tools and my favorite hoodie whatnot because I usually kept everything together for makeup school, plus I threw my hoodie in there for extra protection since I had a compressor inside. They basically handed me a form and said, “get all your receipts, here’s a number, good luck.”
My first experience in LA for a big job and everything I had owned relating to my makeup career was GONE. I was in panic mode. Thankfully my friend (who is also a makeup artist) picked me up and took me to check out the shop he works at to see if one of the other makeup artists there could loan me a few things to use for the weekend. I ended up meeting Megan Areford, who was a Season 1 contestant of Face Off, and even though she had JUST met me, she loaned me her personal makeup kit with all of her own makeup, brushes, etc. I was floored. There’s no way I would have been able to do the shoot that weekend if my friend hadn’t taken me to meet her and get a loaner kit, but the fact that she trusted a girl she didn’t even know to use her personal kit is still the single most amazing thing anyone has ever done for me. She saved my job and now that I’m living out in Los Angeles, she’s even hit me up for some possible future work. That’s the thing about this industry…it’s all about who you know and the connections you make. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have met some fantastic people so far.
And by the way, the airline reimbursed me several months later (unfortunately it made me miss a lot of my school project deadlines because I had nothing to work with), but the check arrived the day before I was leaving for IMATS New York (a makeup artist trade show), so I got to replenish my kit over the weekend and got a wonderful new case that has traveled way more often and has never let me down. (If you’re curious, it’s a Zuca bag. I think every makeup artist should invest in one because it’s amazing. Megan suggested that to me as well and I’m glad I did!) It all worked out eventually!

4. Which is better, Pepsi or coke?

Neither! I don’t drink soda. I prefer a hot cup of tea. 🙂 Earl Grey blends are my favorite.

5. Any big plans for the rest of the year?

I have a few projects I’ll be working on this year, some are *hush hush* but one of them will be working with Dustin Dorough on his Winter Soldier vs Captain America shoot this December. (Which you should go check out his page on Facebook because he’s one of my closest friends and a genuine real-life superhero. He’s amazing.) I’ll also be attending Comikaze Expo in LA this Halloween weekend and maybe a couple other local conventions as they come up. This is why I love that I moved to California! The weather stays decent year round so there are conventions all of the time. So many options. 🙂 I’m also working on starting my YouTube channel since I’ve gotten such a ridiculous and unexpected reaction from that simple makeup I did that’s gone viral! I guess that was the motivation I needed to really get that going after sitting on the idea for so long. I’m going to be doing tutorials, time lapse applications, and I’d love to just talk about all these questions I’m asked on a daily basis like, “Where do I even begin when it comes to makeup?” or “What do I do if I don’t live near any big makeup cities?” I came from a really small town (German Valley, IL. 480 population.) and ran into that same issue when I was trying to get started. I didn’t have any connections, no friends that would help me do things like lifecasting or molding, and when I wanted to get materials or supplies I didn’t know where to go because I was still a good hour and 45 minutes out of Chicago. On top of that, I didn’t know what to even look for. The internet is becoming more and more useful for getting started but I’d like to address those things up front for people that don’t know where else to look. Eventually if I ever get to a financially able point in my life, I’d love to travel to small towns and do workshops/classes so people can have those experiences. My heart goes out to small town artists because, well, I am one! Other than that, I’ll be updating my Facebook page with any upcoming projects or jobs I get for everyone to see. 🙂

Spawn coming back to HBO…not the big screen

Well, if this isn’t bitter sweet news, I don’t know what is. The man himself, Spawn is back! It seems that the animated series that was so popular on HBO is in the works for a come back. This is great news to a number of fans who have been waiting a long time to see their favorite anti-hero again.

Creator of the hellish character teased fans on his Facebook page with this image just earlier this week.

There was also a concept art image of a city street. It looks dark, as it should, and I personally hope that it does great and his popularity rises again. But this is not the Spawn news I had hoped for.

Being a fan since the start of this great series, I had hoped for news of a movie reboot. I loved the original movie and believe the only thing that held it back at all was the CGI. Now days those problems would be left in the dust and McFarlane could bring the dark and sinister world to life in all its glory.

This is a start in my eyes but will they just stick with an animated series? Are there plans to bring him back to the big screen? With all of the awesome superhero movies, why not bring something darker to the screen for all the adults out there? There is no telling at this point but I can always hope.

What about you? Are you satisfied with an animated series or would you like to see his rebirth in a movie also? Tell us below!

Captain Marvel is my favorite new addition

What a day! With Marvels “event” this morning, the fan boys have gone full blown crazy. Not that they shouldn’t be, because face it, the news was nothing short of stunning!  Now most of them were already rumored to be in the works but it was nice to see them official.image

There were plenty of new superheroes announced but the one we are talking about here is the one that caught my eye the most, Captain Marvel.

The fact that I am so interested in this movie was a surprise to me. Now I love Captain Marvel just as much as most comic fan, but she was never my favorite. Something about this strong female hero coming had me excited. Carol Danvers is nothing short of an awesome character, and well rounded at that. But just how does she fit in?

In the comics her journey starts with something that seems pretty familiar. She gets injuries due to Iron Man, who has been taken over during a fight in Cape Town… Now, if you believe like most of us, there is a huge fight in Africa in Age of Ultron. That leads to the first time we will see  T’challa, during what I think will be a search for vibranium. If this is true then why would it not make sense that perhaps we are introduced to Ms. Danvers here as well? It’s not a stretch to think that at some point in this movie that Ultron takes control of Iron Mans suit, and this could lead to her injury. Looking at all the movies coming down the line, they could use her in several movies, and take their time explaining who she is. I think it is pure genius!

If they at least introduce her in Age of Ultron there is reason to believe you could see the continuation of that in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and then show her siding with Tony during the Civil War, all of this coming to a head and her joining the Avengers in the Infinity War. Between these two movies there will be time to explain even more about her in her own solo film, just two months after part 1. Maybe she will come into the end of this “war” with full power?

Is this to much of a stretch? Is this not a perfect way to introduce some of the key characters for the future, and personally I believe Captain Marvel will be a huge part of this story line. What about you? What’s your theories?

Is Cumberbatch feeling a little strange?

Doctor-Strange-Movie-Star uktv-sherlock-benedict-cumberbatch-5

By now, I am sure that everyone has heard the news that Benedict Cumberbatch is in talks to be Doctor Strange in Marvels upcoming movie.(All thisnews coming from Deadline.com) Now, while some people say that this is confirmed and that he is officially going to play the sorcerer supreme, but this is not the case just yet. Nothing is set in stone and you know the world of  movie “news”. But lets say just for a second that Benedict is planning on taking the role.

  • Will he make a good sorcerer?
  • What plot line will they take with the movie?
  • Will he be apart of the new set of Avengers after Age of Ultron?

Well according to the good old eye ball test we can see that even photoshop can make him look like an excellent choice for the role. Now just think about what the awesome wardrobe and make up people over at Marvel can do. You add in the way he just draws everyone in and the voice that can make you believe anything is true. He has just the flair from bringing a magic using superhero to the masses on the big screen. From what I have seen online, there is next to no one who doesn’t think that this is a great movie by Marvel.

As for the plot of this movie, I believe they will stick to the KISS rule. Not familiar with that rule? Keep it simple stupid! I do not think they will do anything to extreme, besides just explaining who Doctor Steven Strange is and go through the entire story of him loosing his ability to be a surgeon. The entire movie will lead to the Ancient One teaching him to be the next Sorcerer Supreme, and then ending with a final fight against Mondo. Maybe you use the end credit scene to show him finding Dormammu from the dark dimension or use this time to tie him into the Avengers. A little sneak peak of the future for Dr. Strange.

This sets up the last point. Will Dr. Strange appear in the third Avengers film. This week we got news from the big wigs at Marvel that the roster of Earths mightiest heroes will not stay the same after Age of Ultron. With Feige giving this statement, it leaves the roster wide open. (also makes me love it even more. I love that he plans to make the Avengers what they should be.)

“The Avengers films, ideally, in the grand plan are always big, giant linchpins,” says Feige. “It’s like as it was in publishing, when each of the characters would go on their own adventures and then occasionally team up for a big, 12-issue mega-event. Then they would go back into their own comics, and be changed from whatever that event was. I envision the same thing occurring after this movie, because the [Avengers] roster is altered by the finale of this film.”

I think that he will in fact be a part of the third Avengers installment. With them aiming for such a high profile actor, it only makes sense to add him into the main story line as fast as possible. With that said, here is my line up for the next Avengers: Cap, Dr. Strange, Antman, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon. I think that most of the “major” Avengers will be split up for the next movie. After the probable Civil War story line, it would make sense for it to be a little less star studded. Disagree? Put your line up in the comments below and let’s talk about it!09pi9okm,

Doctor Who Review: “In the Forest of the Night”

Written by Frank Cottrell- Boyce

Review by: Native Gamer

“In the Forest of the Night” is the tenth episode, of the current season, of the long running series ‘Doctor Who’, and the last episode before the 2 part season finale that starts on November 1st, 2014. The episode stars Peter Capaldi as ‘The Doctor’ and Jenna Louise Coleman as ‘Clara Oswald’ and also features Samuel Anderson as ‘Danny Pink’. This Episode is set in present day London and centers on the mystery of an overnight forest that covers the planet. The episode opens up with a little girl, Maebh (Played by Abigail Eames) running through a forest and finding the TARDIS. She seems to know about the Doctor and asks for his help, where we find that the Doctor thinks he has landed in the wrong place due to a malfunction. But in fact, the TARDIS is exactly where it says, in the Middle of London, but a Forest has overtaken it. From here the Doctor, Clara, Danny, Maebh and the Coalhill “Talented & Gifted” group work together to solve the mystery of the Forest. The result being that, in fact, the trees were there to save the world. A huge solar flare was heading to the earth and the Trees were filling the atmosphere with excess oxygen to protect the earth from the resulting effects.

Now the thing that really makes this show wonderful is can always grow, and this episode is a prime example of that. It feels fresh and new, we get to see how traveling with the Doctor maybe changes the way you look at a crisis for starters. Danny is worried about the kids, he isn’t worried about the events happening around him as much as he wants to get the children home safe, while Clara almost immediately starts wondering what they can do to fix the situation as a whole. This difference of goals leads to some fun dialogue between the couple.

Next thing that is interesting about this particular episode, is that there was no real conflict in the end to beat. Yes near the end they had to make a message to everyone in the world, but that message was to do nothing. The Forest that grew, grew to save humanity, it was the solution to the real problem not a problem in itself. Now my biggest criticism of all of this, is that the whole world stopped trying to kill the forest, based solely on the message of a little girl. This one glaring issue that is never addressed in episode bugs me, but it does not detract from the rest of the episode necessarily.

Here was my biggest takeaway from the whole episode, the only person who saw what was really going on, was the one person everyone but the Doctor completely wrote off. Everyone else thought she was crazy, that she heard imaginary voices because she lost her sister, but The Doctor realized that there was more to it than that, she wasn’t hearing imaginary voices, she was just hearing voices that no one else could. It was through her that the Doctor finally communicated with the forest, and it was her voice that sent the message to the world to stop attacking the trees. The Doctor was teaching us, that no matter who the person is, they can be extraordinary.

Now the thing that has most people abuzz is actually the “Next Time” Trailer that appeared at the end of the episode. It teases the next episode and it did exactly that, tease. We see a possible conflict between Clara and the Doctor, we see Cybermen invading London, we see Missy and the possibility of finding out who she is, and we hear a quote that might be very telling.  “I am no Clara Oswald, Clara Oswald has never existed.” But we will have to wait until next week to see if this is just a red herring or if there is more to the “Impossible Girl” than meets the eye.
