Attention all Northwest comic lovers and all geeks alike!

Northwest Comic Fest, which will have it’s first annual event on August 15th and 16th in Salem Oregon, has announced it will also have a completely free event for Artists and Vendors to set up and sell their wares. The Event will happen at the Salem Oregon Arts Building on February 4th, the First Wednesday of the month and will tentatively be from 2PM-9PM with more set in stone hours to be announced closer to the event.

This event aims to help the local Artists and Vendors that were financially hurt by the recent cancellations and restructuring of other events. The Event will not only be free to attend, but it is free for the 50 Artist and vendors that will be there as well. The Event will include booths with things for sale, Art Demonstrations, and performances.

If you live in Oregon, I highly recommend you come check this out. They also have a Website for Northwest Comic Fest, and a Facebook page for both events. We will also be covering Northwest Comic Fest in August, described as “not a Con but a Celebration” for all the things we love. More information about that event will be available closer to the event happening.

Have any events you’re looking forward to? Let us know below, and Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook.

A new Nerd Wife review! Big Hero 6!

Big Hero 6: Come One Come All!

 Big-Hero-6-poster-11,jpg

I wanted to take my kids to see this movie opening weekend but secretly, I was the one that wanted to see it most. BH61Animated movies are no longer just for children and I think it’s awesome. This movie is a MUST see! I loved it. The beginning is a little sad but it sets the whole movie up. It’s about Hiro, the main character/teenage brother of Tadashi. Hiro wasn’t really into the idea of going to college like his brother and Tadashi tried to show him the joy and achievements of being something greater. Tadashi was in the process of creating a personal robot nurse as a school project that can diagnose various ailments and injuries; he called him Baymax. This persuaded Hiro to try and get into this prestigious school via a science fair by creating something called microbot; basically tiny robots that you can control with your mind and do almost anything. The microbots are also are extremely attracted to one another, much like an ionic bond for all you science buffs out there. I will not ruin the story but some stuff goes down and the microbots are gone for good.

BH63The awesome thing about Baymax is he is just so freakin lovable and cute! Everything from his large marshmallow figure to his need to help just gives you all the warm fuzzies and you just want to snatch him up and have one of your own! This drive to help led Baymax to help Hiro find more microbots that were being manufactured in an old warehouse somewhere in the city. Of course, this gets them in a bit of trouble… You know, giant robot walking through the city with a teenage boy trying to catch up and then they get caught by the guy who stole the microbot design. This is when Baymax gets some much needed/super awesome upgrades! Although don’t worry he is still quite the goober. The rest of the story, as you can imagine is fighting the bad guy to save the world with a touch of heart wrench at the end.

Moral of this review is, it doesn’t matter if you have kids, go see the movie. Take your girlfriend.. Don’t have one? No problem, take your sister/brothers kids! Don’t have those either? You don’t need’em.  Just drag yourself to the theatre and make sure to come back and tell me thank you! This movie is awesome and the sequel that they set up is going to be great as well. I love this movie more than any animated movie I’ve seen in a while. Baymax for the win!

Overall rating: 10 out of 10!! There was nothing more than could have added to this movie to make it any better!

Day 3 Wizard World Tulsa: See you guys next year!

After three long days for all the cosplay, merch, and celebrities that we could ask for, it has come to an end. If you were anything like us, you are worn out and glad to be at home. After a convention comes ends, there is always that day of pure nothing. We just sit back and relax and look over all the tweets, photos on Facebook, and show off all the awesome things we picked up from the con.

But let’s look over all the fun from the final day!

When we arrived at 10am the line was already wrapping down the street and towards the edge of  the Cox Convention Center. People had shown up early to be one of the first few in and find the good spots in line for autographs. After 45 mins of waiting they decided to open the doors and little early and let everyone in! The doors came open and it was like a flood!

DSC_2820It was nice to see Tulsa’s news programs take so well to the convention. They has had experience covering the cons, seeing that Tokyo in Tulsa comes every year. There was even a news crew interviewing cosplayers that were more than willing to answer any questions they had.

We followed the crowd down to the celebrities area and just chatted with a few of them. They would not allow us to use our camera down in that area, for obvious reasons, so we do not have many pictures of the guest. ( If you have some that you would like to have featured, just send them to our email at projectsplaygroundinfo@gmail.com)

The cosplay on Sundays is always a little lighter but the level of cosplay did not drop at all! There were awesome costumes all around. We found a fantastic Black Adam and a few more that you can check out for yourself in the pictures below!

DSC_2827 DSC_2829 DSC_2830

If you could not tell from the lines in the picture above, Tulsa sold out it’s first major comic con and with that Wizard World has already announced that they will be back next year! The date we are hearing is Oct 25th, 2015.To us, this is the greatest news of the weekend. Them wanting to come back and all the vendors talking about how great the people were is just fantastic! I always knew that if a well organized comic con were to come here that Tulsa would come out in numbers and show them that they were not making a mistake. So even though this year has come to an end, we will see you all next year and make sure to come back to the blog and check out more of the conventions and news that we post weekly! Hope you all had a blast and if you could not make it, we hope to see you next year!

Day 2 at Wizard World Tulsa! Cosplay… cosplay everywhere!

Today we spent our time out with the people! We love just taking some time to sit back and admire all the work people put into these amazing costumes. There was everything from beginners to pros walking around! It was truly inspiring to see all the fantastic costumes that were there.

DSC_2905

It was not entirely one sided on any certain fandom either. There was everything from Starwars to comics. The endless amount of people kept us quite busy for most the day. Make sure to flip through the huge gallery we have below and enjoy some of them yourself! We were talking with a ton of you and feel free to leave a comment below, letting us know who you were!

But, just because we did all that does not mean that we did not take the time to go and explore the convention and see what they had to offer. We stepped into a few panels and just soaked in some of the awesome information that the presents were offering. There were numerous Q and A’s that we saw for a small period of time and don’t forget the awesome cosplay contest that some of you were entered into no doubt!

The exhibitorsDSC_3053 floor was awesome to walk through. There was a little bit of everything and even some items that I had never seen before. The amount of craftsmanship and art that we saw was astounding. I even picked me up a couple of pop dolls to get me closer to completing my Assassins Creed collection! (As you can see on the left)

And finally there was the celebs! The people that many of us have dreamed of meeting but never had the chance to. Today there was more than enough time for everyone to go by and say hello, pick up an autograph, or even get a photo op! We will be talking with a few tomorrow and we will bring you those interviews as soon as possible! Who were you guys most excited about seeing?

To us, this was a big step for Tulsa. We brought a major comic con to town, and we sold it out! We made sure to show them that we can handle having the stars come to town. I love the smaller, more home grown, cons as much as the next guy but sometimes it is nice to enjoy the spectacle of something this massive. We will see them back in the years to come, I am sure of that! Enjoy the gallery below and make sure to find us on facebook at the link below!

Welcome to Wizard World Tulsa! Day 1

10486639_10152947261996807_3479342620159996143_n

Well guys, the day has finally come, and we are more than excited. Wizard World has finally come to Tulsa and brought with it the first major Comic Con. We have Tokyo in Tulsa which represents the anime fandom with the best of them but we have yet to have a big ticket Comic Con come in. Finally we have an entire weekend of A-list celebrities and more vendors than you can shake a stick at. (click here for a schedule of all day tomorrow)

As is to be expected, the crowds were large but not nearly as big as they will be tomorrow. Everyone was buzzing around and all with smiles. The cosplayers were out in force (although I expect there to be many tomorrow) and there was a everything from Doctor Who to Dragon Ball Z. Make sure to look over the small gallery below to see all the awesome cosplay we found tonight and make sure to check back tomorrow night for even more!

DSC_2803The game rooms down below were already crawling with people playing someDSC_2802 of the 100’s of free games there. If you get the chance make sure to check out the gaming floor and play a round or two and make some new friends! Love role playing games? They will be running DnD and Pathfinder all weekend long. Card games more your pace? Magic and others are also going most of the day! A great time for any table top gamer and just people who want to take a load off and laugh!

Now, let’s just talk over the look of the con. The DSC_2807convention center just looks like a different place all together. The main floor is opened up and just seems to be enormous! The vendors have it packed out and there is unique items, collectibles, and clothes from wall to wall! If you can not find what you want here then you either have very specific taste or you are looking for the wrong thing! Make sure to plan for time to walk slowly and oh! and ah! at all the fantastic artist and craft makers as well! This should take you hours to make it through just to appreciate all the awesome!

The Wizard World merch table also has some pretty cool things to grab. I personally will be picking up a patch and lanyard tomorrow (and in case you were wondering, no we were not paid to say this…we wish we were)

All in all it was an amazing first day and we can’t wait to check out some of the awesome panels tomorrow and just soak in all the love for our geek fandoms! Make sure to look out for us and check back tomorrow for more coverage and even more cosplay. For now, enjoy the small gallery!

We talk coming home and cosplay with Meg Turney!

Well guys, one of the highlights of the Alamo City Comic Con for me was getting the chance to meet Meg Turney from Rooster Teeth and get to know her a little better. Below is the interview from the weekend. Make sure to check out all the links at the bottom and the small gallery!

Enjoy!

Me: How are you enjoying San Antonio so far?

Meg Turney: I love it. I’m from Austin so I’m familiar with San Antonio.

Me: Are you excited to be back in Austin?

Meg: Absolutely! So excited. Um, I mean California was fun, but it’s good to be home.

Me: I know from everything that you sounded glad to be back. Are you getting to much grief for working here in Austin with Rooster Teeth and all that?

Meg: I find that the real fans are just excited that I’m happy, and the people that say things like ” oh bad career move” or whatever they want to say, um those aren’t real fans so they’re not my focus.

Me: Absolutely, I was sad to see you leave Source Fed, you were one of my favorites, but now it is changing and evolving. What do you think about some of the newer people they have on Source Fed like Matt Lieberman?

Meg: You know actually, when i was discussing leaving, I told Phil (Philip Defranco)  or Phil and I talked about my leaving pretty early on, so I had a chance to meet all the new people. I kind of actually put my input into who I thought could fill the role the best and Ranna is amazing, I love her. I fought really hard, not fought like i had to fight but I was just really vocal about how much I liked her and I was really happy that they chose to have her come on and sort of fill my place there cause I think she is fantastic.

Me: So what are your plans now, working with Rooster Teeth, going forward? Any big plans?

Meg: You know just doing Rooster Teeth stuff. We just started the know it all series. It’s been really fun and I love doing a live show, which is exciting. I’m just starting to do the patch, hopefully sometime I will do the podcast. Just trying to get my footing in Rooster Teeth and in their fan base. And honestly, my favorite thing is just talking about video game news and I get to do that every day so I’m happy with that.

Me: Any cosplays coming up?

Meg: Yes! I Actually have been working on a Utena costume from Revolutionary Girl. I am about a solid days work away from finishing it. I thought I was going to get to finish it this weekend; i just didn’t have time. That will be next and I am really excited about that.

Me: How did Penny (Her dog) take the move?

Meg: Oh, Penny is so happy. We have a back yard, which she never had in California. She has a cat friend now. So that was an adjustment, but I think she really does enjoy it. When he’s not around she looks for him and they’re friends.  I think L.A. was just to much city for Penny. She loves squirrels/ and all that so she really loves it.

Me: Well, thank you very much for your time.

Meg: Of Course!

Me: It was great getting to meet you and talk with you.

Meg: Thank you so much.
